Standard Childbirth Educator Certification

1. Be a member of CAPPA.
(All CAPPA certified professionals are required to maintain continuous membership. A lapse in your CAPPA membership will result in a 50.00 reinstatement fee and all overdue membership dues must be paid. CAPPA certified professionals who let their membership lapse more than 120 days must pay a 100.00 reinstate fee plus all past due membership dues.)

2. Choose and read 5 books from the CAPPA required reading list. One book is required reading: Childbirth Education: Practice, Research and Theory by Nichols and Humenick.

3. Complete "Pre-Workshop Study Guide" prior to completing step eight (8).

4. Attend a local childbirth education series as an observer. The class must be taught by a certified childbirth educator and must be at least 10 hours in total length (proof required). A detailed outline of topics, time allotments, and media used (use form A, Class Observation Form). If no class is available, contact CAPPA about the video option.

5. Must attend a local breastfeeding class. Submit one copy of form B (Specialty Class Observation Form). If no class is available contact CAPPA for substitute.

6. Must attend a local newborn care class. Submit one copy of form B (Specialty Class Observation Form). If no class is available contact CAPPA for substitute.

7. Observe 2 labours/births totaling at least 10 hours. Submit form C (Labour/Birth Observation Form.)

8. Attend a CAPPA Approved Childbirth Education Training Workshop. Steps 1 through 7 must be completed prior to attending the workshop.

9. Must pass an open book test on childbirth education topics - 85% passing grade required.

In order for candidates to be eligible for CAPPA certification they must sign and agree to the CAPPA Code of Conduct, Philosophy, Scope of Practice and Grievance Policy.

In the event a candidate fails to pass certification requirements, the candidate has up to one (1) year to complete the failed portions of the certification requirements. There will be no further processing fees. The candidate who exceeds one (1) year to complete the aforementioned portions of certification may be asked to re-enter the certification program and may incur additional fees.

Accelerated Childbirth Educator Certification

Must meet one of the following requirements to enter the program

1. Be an RN or midwife with at least one(1) year clinical experience (ie. L&D, Maternity, Public Health etc)

2. Be an experienced labour doula - certification required.

3. Be an experienced childbirth educator - sixty (60) hours of documentable perinatal teaching experience. Letter from supervisor or colleague or class evaluations accepted.

*Copies of licenses/certifications required.

Upon successful completion of the steps below participants will be CAPPA Certified Childbirth Educators:

Distance Childbirth Education Certification

Steps to CAPPA childbirth educator certification

Distance Program Requirements

3. Attend a childbirth education series (local) as an observer. The class must be taught by a certified childbirth educator and must be at least 10 hours in total length (proof required). A detailed outline of topics, group dynamics, course structure and adult learning principles is required. If no class is available ask CAPPA about video option.


4. Must attend a local breastfeeding class (proof required). If no class is available, contact CAPPA for substitute.

6. Order the Distance Childbirth Educator Program. Includes:
Childbirth Educator Manual, certification packet and CBE workshop video series. ($400)


7. Must pass an open book test on childbirth education topics - 85% passing grade required.


8. Observe 2 labors/births totaling 10 hours. Submit Labour/Birth Observation Form.


9. Must submit 2 letters of recommendation for teacher certification from a Certified Labour Doula, Certified Childbirth Educator, Midwife, OB, Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), CAPPA Lactation Educator, Certified Antepartum or Certified Postpartum Doula.


10. Must submit video or audiotape of yourself teaching at least 2 hours of a childbirth series. You will be evaluated on the following: Content (based on the risk/benefit model), group dynamics, style of presentation, adult learning principles and teaching strategies.


11. Must submit class outline and curriculum (including all handouts).

5. Must pass an open book test on childbirth education topics - 85% passing grade required.

6. Childbirth class evaluations from 5 students and/or evaluations from supervisor.
