The Distance CBE Program

Description

The Distance CBE Program is a great option for those who wish to become certified as a Childbirth Educator but cannot attend a Childbirth Educator Certification Workshop in their area. It is also a good idea for those who wish to fulfil the certification requirements at their own pace. Childbirth Educators in-training have two (2) years after purchasing the certification packet to complete and submit their certification requirements.

Distance Program Requirements

1. Be a member of CAPPA Canada ($55.00 for a 1 year membership; rebates available for multi-year memberships). All CAPPA Canada certified professionals are required to maintain continuous membership. A lapse in your CAPPA Canada membership will result in a $50.00 reinstatement fee and all overdue membership fees must be paid. CAPPA Canada certified professionals who let their membership lapse more than 120 days must pay a $100.00 reinstatement fee plus all past due membership fees.

2. Choose and read 5 books from the CAPPA CBE required reading list (available here).

3. Complete the CBE Pre-Workshop Study Guide (available here). You will need to submit the completed study guide with the rest of your certification requirements.

4. Attend a local childbirth education series as an observer. The class must be taught by a certified childbirth educator and must be at least 10 hours in total length (proof required). Submit a detailed outline of topics, time allotments, and media used (use Form A: Class Observation Form available in the CAPPA Canada Certification Packet). If no class is available, contact CAPPA Canada about a video option.

5. Attend a local breastfeeding class. Submit a summary of what you learnt (use Form B: Speciality Class Observation Form, available in the CAPPA Canada Certification Packet). If no class is available in your area, please contact CAPPA Canada for a substitute.

6. Attend a local newborn care class. Submit a summary of what you learnt (use Form B: Speciality Class Observation Form, available in the CAPPA Canada Certification Packet). If no class is available in your area, please contact CAPPA Canada for a substitute.

7. Enter the Childbirth Educator Distance Certification Program by purchasing the Distance Childbirth Educator Certification Packet ($450.00), available at our store (a proof of purchase required when submitting your certification requirements). It includes the CAPPA Canada Childbirth Educator Manual, the CAPPA Canada Childbirth Educator Certification Packet and the Childbirth Educator Workshop Video Series.

8. Observe two (2) labours/births totalling a minimum of ten (10) hours. Submit a summary of what you observed for each birth (use Form C: Labour/Birth Observation Form, available in the CAPPA Canada Certification Packet).

9. Submit a video or audiotape of yourself teaching at least two (2) hours of a childbirth series. You will be evaluated on the following: Content (based on the risk/benefit model), group dynamics, style of presentation, adult learning principles and teaching strategies.

10. Submit two (2) letters of recommendations from a Certified Labour Doula, Certified Childbirth Educator, Midwife, OB, Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), CAPPA Lactation Educator, Certified Antepartum or Certified Postpartum Doula.

11. Submit a curriculum development for a 12 hour CBE Series, include objectives, media used and hand-outs. More details will be given during the workshop.

11. Pass the test on childbirth education topics. This test will be sent to you when all other requirements are met. The test is an open book test. An 85% passing grade is required.

12. Sign and agree to the CAPPA Code of Conduct, Philosophy, Scope of Practice and Grievance Policy.

13. Submit the necessary fees for distance certification ($150.00).

In the event a candidate fails to pass certification requirements, the candidate has up to one (1) year to complete the failed portions of the certification requirements. There will be no further processing fees. The candidate who exceeds one (1) year to complete the aforementioned portions of certification may be asked to re-enter the certification program and may incur additional fees.

Note: CAPPA Canada encourages its birth professional in-training to submit their certification requirements electronically. If this is not a possibility, the paperwork must be submitted by mail and NO ORIGINALS should be sent, only photocopies.
