Description

In the comfort of your home at your convenience, this four (4) discs training will examine the Postpartum Doula’s role in current society.You will have an understanding of the normal postpartum expectations and the ability to identify needs of the family that go beyond the postpartum doulas scope of practice, with resources to refer them to. Among the subjects will be breastfeeding, newborn care and Postpartum Mood Disorder.Effective communication is discussed to help you develop a plan with the family. Marketing you business is also discussed on the discs. This program does require additional attendance to a breastfeeding and newborn class. Support is available via e-mail and Facebook.

We recommend the distance program for those who do not have access to a Postpartum Doula Workshop. However, physically attending a workshop enhances your knowledge and allows you interact and possibly network with others wishing to become Certified Postpartum Doulas. Whichever route is best suited for you, CAPPA Canada is always available for questions or as a resource by phone or email.

 

Postpartum Doulas in-training have two (2) years after purchasing the Distance Certification Package to complete and submit their certification requirements.

 

What you need to do to get started:
1. Write a letter of intent to the CAPPA Canada Executive Directors and the CAPPA Canada PostpartumDoula Director explaining why you wish to become a CAPPA Canada certified labour doula and why the distance program is best for you.

2. Prepare a list of postpartum resources available in your area and submit it with the letter of intent.

Distance Program Requirements

1. Once accepted in the program, purchase the Distance Postpartum Doula Certification Package, available at our store (a proof of purchase is required when submitting your certification requirements).

  • Option 1 - Complete Distance Program ($495.00): Option 1 is a complete package including everything that is necessary for certification as a Postpartum Doula with CAPPA Canada through the distance program, except your membership and processing fee. The DVDs you purchase through this program, will be a valuable addition to your lending library. The package includes: a welcome letter explaining the program, the CAPPA Canada Postpartum Doula Manual, 4 DVDs of a two-day CAPPA Canada workshop*, a program outline that will guide you through the two-day workshop, Health Canada handouts x 3, CAPPA Canada Postpartum Doula certification packet, Breastfeeding-Making the Connection DVD, Perinatal Mood Disorder - Facilitators DVD, Bringing Baby Home DVD, and a Healthy Beginnings book.
  • Option 2 - Basic Distance Program ($400.00): Option 2 is designed for doulas that are choosing to not purchase the DVD/book package that are required to view as part of the certification process. These doulas may have access to the above DVDs for viewing by, already owning, have previously viewed the DVD's and books or are choosing to purchase them at a later date. Understand, if you choose this option, the certification process does require you to write a report on what you have learned from the DVDs. The package includes: a welcome letter explaining the program, the CAPPA Canada Postpartum Doula Manual, 4 DVDs of a two-day CAPPA Canada workshop*, a program outline that will guide you through the two-day workshop, Health Canada handouts x 3, and the CAPPA Canada Postpartum Doula certification packet.

2. Be a member of CAPPA Canada ($55.00 for a 1 year membership; rebates available for multi-year memberships). All CAPPA Canada certified professionals are required to maintain continuous membership. A lapse in your CAPPA Canada membership will result in a $50.00 reinstatement fee and all overdue membership fees must be paid. CAPPA Canada certified professionals who let their membership lapse more than 120 days must pay a $100.00 reinstatement fee plus all past due membership fees.

3. Choose a book from each category on the required reading list and three (3) additional books from the CAPPA CPD required reading list (available here) for a total of seven (7) books (use Form C: Confirmation of required readings, available in the CAPPA Canada Certification Packet). Among the chosen books, select two (2) and submit a book report for each totalling 3500 words. One book report must deal with breastfeeding.

4. Attend a local breastfeeding class (ie La Leche League) or breastfeeding consultation as an observer/volunteer with an IBCLC (a proof of attendance is required for either choices - minimum of 4 hours - when submitting your certification requirements). Submit a 250-300 word summary of what you learnt (use Form B: Speciality Class Observation Form, available in the CAPPA Canada Certification Packet). If no class is available in your area, please contact CAPPA Canada for a substitute.

5. Attend a local newborn class and submit a 250-300 word summary of what you learnt (use Form B: Speciality Class Observation Form, available in the CAPPA Canada Certification Packet). For this requirement, you may attend a portion of a childbirth education class. If no class is available in your area, please contact CAPPA Canada for a substitute.

6. Submit proof of Infant and Child CPR certification through an accredited certification program.

7. Submit two letters of recommendation from a certified labour doula, certified childbirth educator, certified lactation educator, certified postpartum doula, certified antepartum doula, midwife, obstetrician, or lactation consultant (IBCLC). 

8. Submit two letters of recommendation and evaluations from past postpartum doula clients with a continuum of care of no less than one (1) week each and a minimum of 20 hours for each (use Form A: Postpartum Doula Evaluation Form: Clients, available in the CAPPA Canada Certification Packet).

9. Maintain a resource manual with information on local support. 

10. Pass the test on postpartum and childbirth topics included in your packet. The test is an open book test and the answer sheet must be submitted with your final certification. An 85% passing grade is required.

11. Sign and agree to the CAPPA Code of Conduct, Philosophy, Scope of Practice and Grievance Policy.

12. Submit the necessary fees for certification ($75.00**).

* Please note that EACH person who is seeking labour doula certification through the CAPPA Canada distance labour doula program must buy their own set of doula training tapes (tape sharing is not allowed, therefore tapes and certification packet are mailed together)

** Certification Processing Fee is due with the submission of completed Certification Application.

 

In the event a candidate fails to pass certification requirements, the candidate has up to one (1) year to complete the failed portions of the certification requirements. There will be no further processing fees. The candidate who exceeds two (2) year to complete the aforementioned portions of certification may be asked to re-enter the certification program and may incur additional fees.

Note: CAPPA Canada encourages its birth professional in-training to submit their certification requirements electronically. If this is not a possibility, the paperwork must be submitted by mail and NO ORIGINALS should be sent, only photocopies.

 

Certification Results Policy
It will take approximately 4-6 weeks for CAPPA Canada to grade and process your certification materials once received. CAPPA Canada receives a high volume of certification requests. CAPPA Canada will contact you by letter or email within that time frame once your application has been reviewed.
